Treatment

The main advantages of methadone treatment are obvious – it helps wean addicts off dangerous drugs such as heroin. There are many other advantages of using methadone treatment though.
Methadone is legal for starters. Addicts who use the opioid as a way of treatment acknowledge that they have a problem and using methadone is the best method for them. Methadone is also relatively cheap compared to other treatment programmes. The cost of the average treatment in the U.S. can be anything between $50- 300 per week. This can be covered by private insurance or Medicaid though. Most patients are often encouraged to enrol in public welfare for the Medicaid insurance. In the Netherlands methadone clinics are free for patients. All costs are covered by the basic health insurance clause and since every person from the age of 18 in the Netherlands is required to have health insurance, the majority who require the treatment should be covered.
Methadone is designed to be taken orally, which is cleaner, safer and a deterrence from injecting. Addicts who inject are at serious risk of blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. As methadone lasts longer in the body only one dose needs to be taken daily. This should encourage recovering addicts to be able to live a normal life again, and lead to a healthy diet and balanced lifestyle. The recovery process with methadone will also be experienced with less discomfort than those who would be quitting via other means. There will be people who can help on a daily basis too by offering counselling and/or therapy. Attending methadone clinics on a daily basis gives people a structure to their life and puts them in regular contact with those who can help further.
Studies have also shown that with the introduction of methadone treatment criminal activities have been reduced. Many illegal drug users whose addictions have got out of control find themselves turning to crime to feed their habit. Users of methadone therefore find themselves actually saving money as it is much cheaper and they will have no fear or paranoia of facing discrimination from the public or arrest from the law.
Most importantly however, methadone users will find themselves less at risk of death. Heroin or other such abusive drugs can seriously jeopardise the user’s life by putting them at severe risk of disease, overdose, or an intoxication-caused accident. Opiate addicts who are not using methadone as a treatment are actually more than three times more likely to die than those who are using the methadone maintenance treatment programs.

I would be grateful if there is anyone out there who has insurance that covers even just a part, or your entire Methadone cost. You can post, but you can write me at billgoldstein1@aol.com If you know of any factual situations where a friend gets re-imbursed I would appreciate this.

    Thank you very much,
    Bill Gold

Medi-cal covers methadone 100%. Anyone on ssi has medi-cal, but I believe anyone in a low income can get medi-cal.
